The Apple TV has made a return to Amazon after a nearly two-year absence that began in October 2015. There’s now an order page for the new 64GB Apple TV 4K that’s listed as “ships from and sold by Amazon.com,” signifying that the online retail giant will once again be offering Apple’s set-top box — once it’s in stock, that is. 9to5Mac first reported on the new listing.
The Apple TV 4K went on sale last Friday and has been relatively hard to come by at Apple’s own retail stores ever since; Apple’s online store currently estimates a shipping wait time of at least two weeks. Only the $199 64GB model is shown as directly available from Amazon at this time.
Amazon pulled both the Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast from its store back in 2015 because neither streaming device offered a Prime Video app at the time. Amazon’s position was this would create confusion for consumers who expected to be able to watch Amazon content on a product purchased from Amazon. Fast forward to June, and the rift was fixed when Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that Amazon would be bringing its popular streaming app and originals shows to the Apple TV sometime in the fall.
The Prime Video app didn’t launch at Apple’s big September event earlier this month, however, where the company unveiled a revamped Apple TV with support for 4K video content. Amazon’s relisting of the Apple TV could signify that it’s coming very soon. Amazon will stream its first Thursday Night Football game for the season this week, so it’s possible that Prime Video might reach the Apple TV’s App Store by then, but neither company has directly confirmed an availability date.
