Apple is launching iOS 11 today, but some features won’t make it onto the new operating system until later, as noted by MacRumors. These include Apple Pay Cash and Messages in iCloud. Messages in iCloud, which allows iMessages to be removed from your device and stored in iCloud to save space, was removed from iOS 11 beta 5 in August, though Apple has said the feature will be re-released in a future update.
Apple Pay is also due out later this fall with an update to iOS 11 and watchOS 4. The feature includes Apple Pay Cash, a kind of digital debit card that allows users to send and receive money via iMessage. That money is received onto the Apple Pay Cash card in Apple Wallet, and users have access to that money instantly. It’s comparable to other peer-to-peer money transfer apps like Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, or similar features on Google and Facebook Messenger.
AirPlay 2, which Apple announced back at WWDC in June, also arrives with iOS 11, but you might not be able to take full advantage immediately as many speakers won’t have a software update that allows them to support the new multi-room functionality. You may need to buy all-new speakers to fully use AirPlay 2.
Despite some missing features from today’s update, iOS 11 still has some pretty useful features like a customizable Control Center and an intelligent Airplane mode that speeds up settings for when you’re traveling or needing to save battery power. But before you update, make sure you check which apps on your phone will work so you’re not left with a half-broken device.
