Apple’s iOS 11 Golden Master — the final version of the software — leaked earlier this weekend, providing an avalanche of revelations about the products that the company is expected to announce on Tuesday, including the name of the next big iPhone, LTE connectivity for the Apple Watch, and animated emoji. There’s been some new revelations about the 3D face scanner, wireless charging, and an interesting fact about the Apple TV.
Face ID
We’ve learned a bit about Face ID — which will allow you to unlock your phone by looking at it — but Brazillian iOS developer Guiherme Rambo found some new details. It appears that you can use Face ID to not only unlock your phone, but also use it to confirm purchases in iTunes and the App Store, as well as autofill for Safari. He notes that Apple Pay is supported, and that it doesn’t show up for him because it isn’t available in Brazil.
To enroll your face, the phone asks you to move your head from side to side, and it guides your head through the process with some animation. Rambo provided some videos demonstrating this.
Interestingly, Face ID might not be limited to just the iPhone: Jeffrey Grossman points out that the iPad and iPod Touch could also use the feature:
Grossman also notes that users double click the side button to confirm a payment, which seems like a good way to prevent accidental purchases.
Wireless Charging
Rambo also found some hints that one of the iPhone models can be charged wirelessly, something that has been rumored frequently this summer. AppleInsider notes that the routine can identify a compatible phone for the system, but it can also show some 3D animation while it’s charging.
Apple TV - 4K Resolution 11 Fusion Chip
Another iOS developer, Steven Troughton-Smith, pointed out that the Apple TV will have 4k resolution — something we know from another firmware leak — but throws in a twist. That resolution will require at least a 15mbps connection, and that the device’s native resolution will be 2160p.
We’ll find out more on Tuesday at Apple’s press event.
