Do you want a free new iPhone 8? Verizon has rolled out an AR scavenger hunt on Snapchat with a total of 256 iPhone 8s to be given out in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Dallas, and Atlanta, as spotted by FastCoDesign. It’s clearly a massive advertisement for the telecommunications giant, but the hunt does involve some neat features and experiences.
To start off, users are asked to scan a Snapcode that will open a link with instructions, before giving you to your first clue. Accessing your location, the app will tell you how far away you are from the prize and when you need to get there. For example, one clue says, “The 8 is hiding near an elephant, that is your clue. But this one lives in a stadium, not in a zoo,” with an ambiguous photo that looks kind of like it’s part of a cute stuffed animal. Verizon says that some 8s will only appear at a certain time like in the rain, or at night.
Hunters will have to solve and follow clues throughout each city, and after the final clue, users will unlock a Snapchat iPhone 8 lens. To win an iPhone, users have to take a selfie with that lens and send it to Verizon where the company will pick the winners, saying, “The more creative you get, the better your chances.”
The theme of the hunt is “8” — as in iPhone 8 — featuring eight cities and eight winners in each city until September 22nd. There is a minor catch, though: those who do win a phone will have to sign up to a plan with Verizon (for obvious reasons). The competition is only running for four days, and it’s currently on its second one, so you better get to it if you want to get your hands on the first iPhone with wireless charging. Meanwhile, if you want a more impressive AR fix, there are plenty of new ARKit apps available now that iOS 11 has dropped.
